Sept. 13, 2023 | Teamster drivers are on the frontlines in the battle against driverless semi-trucks hitting California’s road without a human operator. AVs pose a serious threat to Californians’ lives and livelihoods. On Monday, Sept. 18, a Teamster convoy will travel from Los Angeles to Sacramento, the state’s capital, to demand that Gov. Newsom sign AB 316 to protect good union jobs and keep our streets safe.
The legislation would require a human operator in all vehicles over 10,000 lbs. The bill has passed both houses of the state legislature with more than 90 percent of elected officials supporting it.
“During the pandemic, Gov. Newsom thanked Teamster truck drivers for risking their lives to keep the economy afloat. But he actually needs to prove that he cares about workers by signing AB 316. If Gov. Newsom vetoes this bill, he is putting the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of truck drivers at risk while jeopardizing public safety,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “The Teamsters rightfully stand against such dangerous technology. We will fight to make sure AB 316 becomes law.”
It’s now on Gov. Newsom to do the right thing and side with working families and first responders over Silicon Valley fat cats. Join Teamsters and California trade unionists as we caravan from Los Angeles to Sacramento to demand that Gov. Newsom sign AB 316.
On Monday, September 18, at 10:00 AM in L.A., Teamsters will launch a caravan of trucks to the state capitol. If you live in Southern California and want to attend, RSVP here.
On Tuesday, September 19, at 12:00 PM at the State Capitol in Sacramento, the caravan will arrive. Join thousands of Teamsters, union members, and General President Sean M. O’Brien by RSVP-ing here.
